The purpose of this report is two fold; firstly to describe the surgical and prosthodontic protocols for using the EndoporeŽ dental implant, a new user-friendly dental implant system that uses a unique surface topography to achieve osseointegration by bone ingrowth into the implant surface, for treatment of the completely edentulous mandible with an overdenture; and secondly, to present the results of two human clinical trials using the described protocols. Five year results are available from one of the trials begun in 1989 at the University of Toronto as the developmental patient group for the implant system, and show 93.4% success. In a second trial conducted later in a private practice setting a success rate of 95.1% was achieved with patients followed for periods up to three years.
